Life Beyond Lectures and Personal Academic Support at Sechenov
A medical degree is demanding, and it is easy to picture six years spent only in lecture halls and hospital wards. In practice, much of a student’s growth happens outside scheduled classes, and personal academic support at Sechenov helps students use that time well. In the Leaders in Health Innovations program, extracurricular activity is part of the package rather than an afterthought.

What happens outside the timetable
The program terms include taking part in extracurricular events and projects. Individual development tracks add an extended choice of disciplines, extra internships, master classes and other learning formats. Together they let students explore interests such as digital health, a research question or team leadership beyond the core syllabus.
Conferences and seminars
The university encourages students to attend international conferences and seminars. These events offer a chance to hear about new work in fields like regenerative medicine, neuroscience or artificial intelligence in medicine, and to practice asking questions and presenting ideas in public. For many students, the first conference is where science stops feeling abstract.
Choosing wisely, with a curator
With many options available, the hard part is deciding what to take on. Each student has a curator who provides individual guidance, while mentors support professional and personal growth. Small groups and direct contact with leading faculty mean that advice is based on knowing the student, not on a generic plan. A curator can also help balance new commitments against the demanding workload of clinical study.
An interdisciplinary community
Sechenov brings together physicians, biologists, engineers and IT specialists. Projects that cross these fields expose students to different ways of thinking, from how an engineer tests a device to how a data specialist builds a model. That breadth is useful preparation for anyone interested in innovation in healthcare.
Making it count
Activities outside class are most valuable when they connect to a goal. Some students focus on research and scientific communication; others on leadership and teamwork. The individual trajectory in the program is designed to support either path.
